Mount Meru is one of Africa's highest and most beautiful volcanoes. The route to the summit passes through parkland, montane forest, a giant heather zone and moorland. Finally, the summit is reached by a narrow, barren ridge which provides stunning views of the Ash Cone lying several thousand feet below in the crater and Kilimanjaro in the background. Over 400 species of birds, rhino, elephant, buffalo, baboon, warthog, black and white Colobus monkey and duiker are all found in this delightful "gem amongst parks". The visit to the Ngurdoto crater and Momella lakes, with their superb scenery, flamingoes and other wildlife, is an unforgettable experience.
Meru remains one of the least ascended high altitude peaks in East Africa. It can be appended to the start of any safari itinerary or even as a pre acclimatisation hike for Kilimanjaro. Well worth it for those climbing this as a stand alone peak to see stunning geology, afromontane forest and wildlife on foot.
MOUNT MERU TREK - 6 DAYS
Day 1:
On arrival at the airport you will be met by our driver and transferred to Moivaro Lodge, for overnight on bed and breakfast basis.
Day 2:
Drive to the park gate and walk through game-filled parkland up to Miriakamba Hut, at 2470m. Along the way there are many fine views; including Kilimanjaro from Miriakamba Hut.
Day 3:
After breakfast we walk through the glades and forest filled with black and white Colobus monkeys, to Mgongo wa Tembo (Elephant Ridge). We reach Saddlehut 3-4hrs later and enjoy lunch. In the afternoon continue to the summit of Little Meru for impressive views of the crater and the top of the ash cone and sheer cliffs of the crater’s inner wall. Our evening meal and overnight will be at Saddle Hut. (Full board)
Day 4:
Rise early and walk along the very narrow ridge to the summit (4,566m) watching the sun rise dramatically from behind Kilimanjaro. The return via Rhino point provides spectacular views of the Rift Valley, the volcanoes of Kirumbeni and Lengai and the town of Arusha. Our evening meal and overnight stay will be at Miriakamba Hut. Day 5:
The last day on the mountain, return to Momella Gate (2 hrs) where our driver guide will be waiting. We will then have a game drive in Arusha National Park and a picnic lunch before we return to Moivaro Lodge for dinner and overnight.
